Good Eats Imbibe The Spots The Goods Advice Calendar

Nine issues! Three quarters of a year. We hope we've done an acceptable job of bringing you the best and newest Portland has to offer the men of the city. But, alas, we know there's always room for improvement. So, this is the issue where we'll humbly ask you to take a few moments and tell us what you've enjoyed so far, what you haven't and what you'd like to see more of.

Even if you have no strong opinion one way or the other, we'd even appreciate a little info about you: What line of business are you in? Age? Married? Kids? What part of town do you live, work and dine in? It can only serve to help us make this publication more helpful to you.

Just email us at portlandmensguide@gmail.com and we'll pick one responder at random to win a Spa Foot Tune Up from HairM.

Bazi Bierbrasserie
Summer is upon us, and the beer gods call out for us to imbibe. Lucky for us, Portland has no shortage of beer halls and breweries. With the sun shining upon us, we scoured Portland to find our new favorite Belgian bar.

Boasting seventeen different Belgians on tap, Bazi Bierbrasserie does not fail to deliver beer excellence. Ranging from light, fruity tripels to strong dark ales; this bar caters to all tastes. Cleverly using some of the beers on hand, the bar uses the delicious Belgian beer to enhance their own menu. Certainly we have to highlight the pork sandwich (braised with brune beer) or the charcuterie plate (an excellent assortment of meats and cheeses). Set up with a front patio seating area, this bar is designed for good beer and company.

When visiting be sure to bring some friends along, and try the gamut of Belgians. Your best bet to appease the beer gods and your palet is to give Bazi Bierbrasserie a try.

The Rogue Hall
Portland is in a constant state of transformation. Often, it is hard to keep up and know where to even find some of the newest hangouts. That's where we come in.

One of Portland's newest developments is the addition of the Rogue hall on the PSU campus. Replacing Paccinis, the new Rogue Hall definitely caters to big parties. Attracting students and Portland at large, the Rogue Hall features a rotation of their excellent beer on tap and even by the growler. The menu ranges from creative fare to incredible pizza (available for delivery by bicycle if you can't break away from the office). All in all, Rogue is trying to slice up a new place for big crowds and local beer around the University campus.

There are not many places in which the busy executive can be seen noshing alongside a grad student. But Portland is the kind of town where such things happen and Rogue Hall is the kind of venue that it seems inherently natural to see it.

Blackbird
Considering that most of us don't have the time or instincts to study up on the newest styles, shopping at Blackbird is like pulling your desk closer to the smart kids and copying all the right answers.

Nested on Burnside, Seattle's Blackbird's "classic meets modern" style is a welcome addition to the Portland fashion market. Migrating from mod styles to urban styles and between too many exotic locations to mention here, the Blackbird buyers know what's up. And, as though they're out to prove that being on the cutting edge of fashion doesn't have to hurt, the lion share of their collections boast minimalist prints, agreeable (dark) colors, super soft fabrics, light weaves and only the most informed accents.

Iconic lines such as Obey, Paul Frank and Cheap Monday will get you in fashion without clipping your wings, while those willing to pay the price of higher education will find high end, few-of-a-kind items from around the globe to get them to the head of the class.

Filson Bag:: Without being totally metrosexual, we do take care of ourselves. For instance, we pay attention to our hands. Do we give them a nightly soak to make them as dainty as a Jane Austin heroine? No.

But we know a lady likes a soft touch and when you couple that with our need to do everything with style (even "roughing it"), you'll understand just why we are so in love with the beautifully simple design of this awesome Filson log carrier.

AquaSkip:: Leave it to the Aussies to come up the latest innovation in water sports. Ever tried windsurfing? A total blast and an incredible workout to be sure. Ever tried it without wind. Kind of a bummer.

The AquaSkip employs two hydrofoils and loads of innovation to bring you the most fun you'll find in a 26lb package. Just hop up and down and you'll find yourself gliding over the water at about 20mph. Total. Blast.

Dude Cardigan:: Summer is for slacking. And unless you've been slacking (redundant, no?), you know that Lebowski (a.k.a. The Dude) is king of the slackerdom.

But what you didn't know is that the sweater he wears throughout the film was made by Portland's own Pendleton Woolen Mills. The good news? They've reissued it just in time to keep you warm on those chilling camping trips. The bad news? You're gonna have to wear the heck out of it to get that same patina.

Grooming:: The sun is out and so are the flip flops, which means it's time to tend to your feet and avoid embarrassing looks of disgust if the long winter months have not been kind. Take care of business with a Spa Foot Tune Up at HairM, and in the privacy of your own treatment room you can enjoy the relaxing treatment along with a cold beer and your own remote.

Style:: There are those of us who like to sport casual in summer, but stop short of flip flops (see grooming tip) and feel loafers are too old man-ish. For summer-casual, there's no greater modern classic than the Vans slip-on. The best part? For the same price as retail, you can design every aspect of your own.

Imbibe:: Summer requires one to be more, shall we say, fervent when it comes to drinking. And that doesn't just apply to water. For the biggest bash (and biggest buzz) of your BBQ season, delight your guests with an ice luge. It's a bit juvenile, but trust us when we say your guests will have a blast with this thing.

July Calendar of Events

9th:: Get down to Guild Public House on Burnside Saturday for the Cans Fest. A beer festival like no other, it'll provide the best beers available in a can from around the world. And with cans keeping your beverage colder than a bottle, this is knowledge worth posessing.

9th:: It's hard for us to answer when someone asks who our favorite artist is. We can say without certainty that Beethoven's 9th, which he wrote after having lost his hearing, is about the finest peice of music ever composed, though. It was the very first thing put on to CD. Get to the Schnitz in time for the fourth movement and tell us if you don't get goosebumps.

9th:: The Mississippi Street Fair promises a full day of art, music and entertainment.

12th:: Meet & Greet with the Timbers at HairM Beaverton, 6am-10am. Get a service during that time and 100% of proceeds will be donated to Doernbecher Children's Hospital. Stop back by the HairM Open House later that day, 5pm-8pm. Complimentary services, giveaways and cold Widmers. Check out their remodel and new Barber Lounge soon to be offering $22 cuts on a walk-in basis.

14th::
One might think that one guy with a ukulele might be pretty limited in scope and better relegated to a camping trip, but if you've checked out Eddie Vedder's new record, Ukulele Songs, you'd think different. Don't miss the live show to be converted.

Various Dates:: The whole "romantic comedy" genre was pretty much invented by Bill Shakespeare's As You Like It. And unlike the drivel starring McConaughey at the multi-plex, this is actuall worth seeing. So make this your next date night and score points without wanting to gouge your eyeballs out..

28th-30th:: The mother of all brew fests returns to the waterfront. The Oregon Brewers Festival is one of the nation's longest running festivals of its kind, so you can be sure they've perfected every aspect beyond just serving up great beer.

30th:: Godfathers of grunge, Soundgarden reunite at The Gorge with openers Queens of the Stone Age, Meat Puppets and Mastodon. This one's at the gorge because it would be unsafe to unleash this "cloverfield" of a concert on an unsuspecting city.

All Month:: Spa Foot Tune Up on special at HairM. Save $10 this month.

All Month:: Support The Special Olympics of Oregon and Register for HairM's Charity Golf Tournament, August 17th.
